Receiving an invitation to attend NYFW was a dream of mine so imagine my surprise when it actually happened. When I read the email I thought it was a mistake or maybe some scam. Why would a little ol’ blogger like myself get an invite? Well, it was real and I attended. Flying to NYC to attend NYFW seems all to easy, right? What could possibly be difficult about visiting such a wonderful city to attend an iconic event? Well, a lot! Let’s just say I can see why so many bloggers travel with an entire team of people. Weather this is your first NYFW or you’re a veteran I think we can all learn from each other. I don’t think I’ve perfected the process yet, but I’m working on it!
This will be my main focal point from now on. Scheduling picture taking is something I wish I would have kept in mind. On both trips I was shooting for campaigns I was working on plus I of course needed those cool blogger shots of hailing a cab but most importantly I needed to document my outfits. Picture taking without planning became so rushed, less creative, and was very stressful. How was I supposed to get to my next destination if I had to stop every two seconds because “this spot looks cool for this particular photo” and really that wasn’t the spot or a good photo. My next NYFW I will make sure to arrive a day or 2 early to get all of the main picture taking out of the way, so I’m less stressed as well as still get those spontaneous shots in.
Ugh. This whole finding outfits is beyond stressful! The last 2 seasons I had to keep the weather conditions in mind. When it was cold I had to chose between keeping warm or being stylish. When it was hot I had to keep the humidity in mind so light layers and free flowing items were ideal. When it was cold I definitely dressed conducive to the weather however I feel like I failed way too hard in the stylish department which I totally regret. What I learned is that I took a cab everywhere so I was only outside while getting in or out of a cab. I’ll definitely chose to look stylish next time. Also, for both trips I purchased every single thing brand new when I ended up wearing a lot of which I already owned. Every outfit vision I had was not brought to life due to over thinking. Next time I will wear what I originally planned and not over think something that is typically so simplistic for me. Lastly, don’t over pack as it leads to the over thinking, remember you can’t fret over options you don’t have. Besides, a heavy suitcase is annoying.
Focus On Why I’m There
Why am I there? Meetings, Content, and of course attending the shows. What was I focused on? Being a tourist. On both trips I had a good girlfriend/photographer traveling with me. She is an independent and adventurous girl who didn’t expect anything from me yet I found myself focused on touring the city with her. By the end of this year I’ll have visited NYC four times so I think it’s safe to say that being a tourist is all out of my system. The next trip I will be more efficient with my time. Everyone who is anyone is present during NYFW so that makes networking my top priority!
Sadly, they’re always present in any situation. One of the things that excited me about attending NYFW was the possibility of meeting new blogger friends. We all share a common love and passion and what better way to travel on this blogger journey then with girls who “get it” Get the need to Instagram what you’re eating, who also know not to eat their food until you’ve taken a million photos, and of course will stand on just about anything to get that perfect angled shot. Well, that hasn’t been the case for me. I came across a few rude girls who blatantly ignored my small talk and even walked away clearly annoyed that I had the audacity to even look their way. My very first show that I attended I approached a group of girls to ask if one of them could take a picture of me on the red carpet. One of the girls whipped her hair around and responded with ” We’re not photographers” then turned back around to face her friends. The rejection and humility I felt killed my vibe and made me a little emotional. I still get a little upset with myself for letting something like that upset me. This was an amazing memory and experience that I’ll remember for life, I certainly won’t let mean girls ruin that for me! We’ve all been invited to the same event therefore not one girl is better than the next. Next time I will still be my happy and social self regardless of who accepts my random conversation.
I nailed my hotel location the first time around, but this last trip was a major fail! Most of my shows were in Chelsea yet my hotel was in Time Square. If you’re not familiar with NYC it’s not high heels walking distance. Having your home base to go back to in between shows for any touch ups, to change your outfit or just to kick your feet up for a minutes makes all the difference. Plus, you’ll save a ton of cash on cabs.
If there is one beauty tip to looking your best it’s to Rest Up! Poor sleep lead to me not looking or feeling my best then loading up on coffee which then lead to me not sleeping again that night. Prior to my first show on my last trip I was video chatting with my sister who confirmed that I didn’t look like myself. A lack of sleep plus traveling the night before had taken it’s toll on me. Next time I will make sure I am getting into bed at an earlier time so that I look and feel my best.
I have so many more trips ahead of me and I’ll make sure to update you on more that I’ve learned. Have you attended NYFW? If so, what have you learned?
